Medium Rigid (MR) Licence

Medium Rigid

A Medium Rigid (MR) Truck Licence enables you to operate vehicles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) exceeding 8 tonnes and has two axles. You can also tow a trailer that does not exceed 9 tonnes GVM.

Eligibility Requirements

 

You are eligible to upgrade to a Medium Rigid licence if you have a had a car licence for 1 year, not including your learner licence. This means that you could apply for this licence if you have had your red provisional licence for more than 12 months or you are on your first year of your green provisional licence.

  3. Safe Driving Practices: Defensive driving techniques, hazard perception, and risk management strategies specific to MR truck operation will be emphasised. You'll learn how to anticipate and respond to potential hazards on the road, ensuring the safety of yourself and others.
     

  4. Manoeuvring and Handling: Practice makes perfect when it comes to manoeuvring MR trucks. You'll develop your skills in turning, reversing, parking, and navigating tight spaces under the guidance of experienced instructors.
     

  5. Road Rules and Regulations: Understanding and adhering to relevant road rules, traffic regulations, and legal requirements are essential aspects of MR licence training. You'll study traffic laws applicable to MR truck drivers, ensuring lawful and responsible operation on the roads.

 

Types of Vehicles You Can Drive with an MR Licence

 

Upon successfully obtaining your MR licence, you'll have the authority to operate a variety of vehicles within the specified weight range. Examples include:

  1. Trucks: MR licence holders can drive small trucks commonly used for deliveries, transportation of goods, and commercial purposes. Generally 10 - 12 pallet sized trucks.
     

  2. Buses: Operate larger buses, those commonly used by public bus companies.
     

  3. You can also driving any vehicles in the LR class.
